Popped by an ongoing project for an extension to a thatched cottage in County Mayo last week (first visit in a while due to Covid & lockdown). The new works are complete and now being lived in whilst the existing Thatched cottage is being refurbished. More on the details and the materials we’ll be using at a later date.
The tricky bit is how to extend a traditional 3 room thatched cottage to provide enough space for a large family and all the requirements of current living standards Whilst maintaining (hopefully) the integrity and architectural form of the existing house. We have tried to achieve this with a small ‘link corridor’ that connects under the thatch and opens up into the new extension. The proportions and scale of the extension match the existing cottage; for example the front to back depth of each section and the roof pitches are similar. The goal is not to ‘swamp’ the existing house with the new extension. Below are a few images:
